This guide covers Path of Exile 1, the free Steam game. A productive first session has a small scope: choose a character mode, make one main skill work, and learn what changes when you replace equipment. You do not need an endgame shopping list before you understand those decisions.
Choose your league before choosing a build
A challenge league offers a fresh start with its own economy. Existing characters in the permanent leagues do not become new league characters. Grinding Gear Games describes this distinction in its challenge league explanation; that older post explains the structure, not the current league’s content.
Choose the ordinary version of a challenge league if you want its current mechanics and a new character. Standard suits continuing a character outside that seasonal cycle. Read the full mode name before confirming: Hardcore, Solo Self-Found and Ruthless add distinct restrictions or challenges. The Steam description specifically identifies Ruthless as a more demanding mode with scarce items and limited crafting.
A league ending is not the same as deleting its characters. GGG’s July 2026 migration notice confirms character and progress migration at that league’s end. Check the relevant announcement when your own league finishes.
Build around a skill you can explain
Active skill gems grant abilities when equipped, while support gems modify compatible skills. Gems also level independently. The shared passive tree has different starting positions for each class, so class, gems and passive choices work together rather than representing three unrelated upgrade lists. GGG outlines these systems in its game overview.
Start by selecting one main damage skill. Read its description and the description of each support you intend to use. Check the skill’s behavior after adding a support; an appealing name alone is not evidence that the combination works.
Before allocating a passive point, state what you expect it to improve. If you cannot connect that benefit to your current character, pause and compare nearby options. A current beginner build guide can supply a route, but it should explain early equipment and gem choices as well as the finished character.
Use the current socket rules
Older advice about mandatory socket-color matching is outdated. In 3.29.0, GGG changed equipment sockets so a gem can be inserted regardless of socket color. Matching a gem to a colored socket now provides a quality benefit. This is documented under Gem Socket Changes in the official patch notes.
When comparing equipment, check what happens to your working skill setup before discarding the old item. Reinsert the gems you need, read their requirements, and confirm that your intended supports still affect the skill. Change one piece at a time so you can identify why an ability stops working or feels different.
This is also a useful date check for outside guides: instructions written before that update may describe an earlier gearing problem. Their build advice needs separate evaluation.
Plan co-op around the same game and mode
Path of Exile is an online game even when you adventure alone. Its areas are instanced for your party. Before starting with friends, agree on the game, platform and exact league or mode, then arrange to progress together.
Do not assume the sequel’s cross-play features apply here. GGG’s account-system explanation states that PoE1 console and PC characters remain separate because PoE1 does not support cross-play. Linking accounts is not a method for moving a console character into a Steam party.
Keep PoE1 and PoE2 advice separate
Path of Exile on Steam is free to start. Path of Exile 2 is a separate game with its own campaign and systems. In particular, its supports are socketed directly into skill gems, so a PoE2 gem tutorial is not an equipment tutorial for PoE1.
At the October 30, 2026 check, the PoE2 Steam page still sells Early Access and describes free-to-play access as a future release. Check that page for its current status. You do not need to purchase the sequel’s access pack to begin the original game.
